Take the number of people in your home, multiply that by how hard your water is and multiply that by how many gallons of water your household uses per day. Find the efficiency rating of your softener and it will tell you how often salt will be used.
Most systems will accept either salt or potassium. Potassium is more expensive than sodium, and more will need to be used. If dietary restrictions are involved, always use reverse osmosis water.
